The Monster Visits the World's Fair

The World's Fair brings joy and happiness to many people. To others it brings excitement. But to me it brought the greatest adventure of my life.

It was a warm July day as I began my private tour of the New York World's Fair. The Pavilions were fascinating. After many hours I sat in a secluded spot behind one of the pavilions marveling over the wonders of our age. A soft, gentle whirr caused me to look at the sky. A strange type of craft was landing. As a door on the craft slid open I recognized the passenger as the three legged, one armed, headless monster whom I had met last winter in a startling adventure. As before I sat there petrified. Some strange force pulled me into his craft. He spoke to me through mental telepathy and told me that he was spying on the progress of the earthlings. I quickly ran over to what appeared to be a weapon. As I pressed a button on it a force threw me out of the craft. As I lay half stunned the craft took off as gently as it had come.

Yes, some people went for excitement. Others for joy and happiness. But few stories of the World's Fair can compete with the one about the three-legged, one armed, headless monster from another planet.

Dear Judge,

Forgive me this Christmas Day (& a blessed one to you, sir!)

but I am sorry - I do not understand the well-educated poo-pooing the existence of God. It is fashionable these days to embrace pagan beliefs, so why is it so unpopular to stand for the One Triune God? Is it because He has said "No" to certain practices? The ones that we embrace & accept because they allow us to live selfishly?

How could anyone with a modicum of intelligence & sensibility think that we're it - that man's the smartest thing going?

Pardon my rant, but I just don't get it. & I pray for the enlightenment of us all...

& again, a very Merry Christmas to you & yours!

Thank you for the history, I love this beautiful hymn, it's one of those that transports you to the very heavenlies.

The most felicitous English translation for sheer excellence in the marriage of sound, meter, and meaning is that in the Anglican hymnbook:

Now, my tongue, the myst'ry telling
Of the glorious Body sing,
And the Blood, all price excelling,
Which the Gentiles' Lord and King,
Once on earth among us dwelling,
Shed for this world's ransoming.

Giv'n for us, and condescending
To be born for us below,
He with men in converse blending
Dwelt, the seed of truth to sow,
Till he closed with wondrous ending
His most patient life of woe.

That last night at supper lying
Mid the twelve, his chosen band,
Jesus, with the Law complying,
Keeps the feast its rites demand;
Then, more precious food supplying,
Gives himself with his own hand.

Word-made-flesh, true bread he maketh
By his word his Flesh to be,
Wine his Blood; when man partaketh,
Though his senses fail to see,
Faith alone, when sight forasaketh,
Shows true hearts the mystery.

Therefore we, before him bending
This great Sacrament revere;
Types and shadows have their ending,
For the newer rite is here;
Faith, or outward sense befriending,
Makes our inward vision clear.

Glory let us give and blessing
To the Father and the Son
Honor, thanks, and praise addressing,
While eternal ages run;
Ever too his love confessing
Who from both with both is One.

Amen.
